BOYLE HEIGHTS — An 11-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured Friday night after a Ford Mustang slammed into a parked car that jumped the curb and slammed into the pedestrians on the sidewalk, police said.
KTLA reported that the pedestrians were near a sidewalk taco stand on Whittier Boulevard east of Marietta Street when the crash took place at about 7.05 p.m.
The 11-year-old victim, Elektra Yepez, died after being transported to a hospital, said a statement from the LAPD Central Traffic Division. One the three other pedestrians taken to the hospital sustained a fractured right wrist and right leg. An additional victim who was struck by debris was treated at the scene.
The driver of the Mustang, Jose Louis Perez, was arrested for vehicular manslaughter, police said. A juvenile passenger was arrested for possession of nitrous oxide.
Police said that that Perez was driving westbound on Whittier when his Mustang crossed over into opposing traffic lanes and collided with the front of a parked Nissan Sentra, which was shoved onto the sidewalk, striking the pedestrians. The Mustang also crashed into a second parked vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, as it continued down Whittier Boulevard.
