The City Council today approved a motion to name the new Hollenbeck police station in Boyle Heights in honor of the late Rudy de Leon, a former LAPD commander who started a youth boxing gym in the basement of the old station. The action comes after lengthy delays and debate over the name, with many Boyle Heights residents opposed to seeing the Hollenbeck name disappear from the station. Many other residents, however, were upset at Councilman Jose Huizar when the new station opened last September without any mention of De Leon as had been promised. De Leon died a few weeks after the grand opening. Following LAPD policy, the station will most likely be named the Rudy de Leon Hollenbeck Community Police Station, said Huizar spokesman Rick Coca. “This is the really the best case scenario,” he said.
